History

King’s Town School opened its doors in September 2004. During that first year, the guiding principles of small classes and experiential education were established. The Outdoor Education program allowed students to participate in backpacking trips to Frontenac and Algonquin Provincial Parks, learn winter survival skills, and attempt the challenge of high ropes courses. The unique Physical Education classes at King’s Town provided students with the opportunity to try rock climbing, tennis, gymnastics, hockey, and swimming. By incorporating drama into the classroom, students learned about set design, costumes and stage make-up, and production schedules. Performances from Shakespeare’s Macbeth entertained students, staff, and parents alike. Steven Spencer wrote the year-end play “Cinderella”, and the tradition of the King’s Town drama productions began. In order to give back to the downtown area, students and staff volunteered at the Partners in Mission Food Bank, Rideaucrest Retirement home, and “Pitch in Kingston”.

King’s Town grew in reputation and size. As year two began, new staff members were hired, and the school expanded to add new classrooms, a lunch room, and computer facilities. The athletics program developed further, and King’s Town fielded cross country, basketball, and track and field teams. The music program was enhanced with the addition of Scott Milligan as the band instructor. Senior students selected instruments, practised throughout the year, and the school band entertained parents at the first annual Spring Music Concert.

September 2006 saw King’s Town School continue to grow to over 70 students. The process of becoming a Not for Profit organization began. Additional space has continued to be added over the years, with the school expanding to include a second floor in the summer of 2010. There are now 22 staff and almost 100 students and the school continues to offer small classes and an excellent, well-rounded education that provides students with unique experiences both in and out of the classroom.
