Grade 2
In Grade 2 the children build upon their basic foundations in literacy and extend their independence through the development of problem solving skills. There continues to be a focus on proper printing and writing skills while the children experiment with various forms of writing. The Grade 2′s study the 5 W’s, poetry, free and creative writing, as well as speech writing. In Grade 2 the children complete several novel studies, an author study based on authors such as Robert Munsch and they learn how to use reference and resource materials.
In social studies the focus broadens from the local community to world geography. The children will compare communities from around the world and look at traditions and celebrations from different cultures. They make crafts, taste food, play games and listen to guest speakers tell about the unique features their culture. In science they use field studies and experiments to explore transportation, properties of matter, wind and kinetic energy, and the growth and change in animals.
In Grade 2 the children learn about measurement, temperature, time and begin to explore multiplication, division and graphing. The focus in math is on reinforcing automatic recall of basic math skills and is achieved through repetition, practice, and hands on problem solving.
Physical education and living an active and healthy lifestyle are very important at King’s Town School. The children learn about nutrition and healthy living and participate in physical activities that they can continue throughout their life. Yoga, gymnastics, swimming, skating, hiking and key skills from team sports, athletics and cross country running are a few of the activities that the Grade 2′s enjoy, alongside a unique outdoor education program.
At King’s Town school we are concerned about developing well rounded children. Beginning in Grade 1 all children are specialist taught French, music, drama and art in addition to their academic subjects. The Grade 2 program at King’s Town School will reinforce and build upon the basic skills learned in Grade 1 and encourages a life-long love of learning.
