Grade 4
In Grade 4, both the Language and Mathematics programs at King’s Town School provide students with a solid foundation in the basics. The spelling program follows a phonics based approach, which includes a wide variety of activities and plenty of practice in spelling concepts, vocabulary work, dictionary skills, and focused writing lessons. The math program is incremental in nature and encompasses all strands of mathematics in each lesson, giving students many opportunities to practice, review and demonstrate their learning. Numerous and varied hands on learning experiences, cross curricular activities and relatable real world experiences, are built into units in all subject areas whenever possible.
The fourth grade students have grown crystals and worked with rocks and minerals in the classroom and, in addition, the class enjoyed a trip to Queen’s University to the visit the geology museum and participated in their mineral identification program.
As part of their social studies unit, the Grade 4 class enjoy a trip to Toronto to watch a performance of Medieval Times. The students study several poets and authors over the year, and do thorough novel studies of the corresponding texts, such as Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. Additionally, the students participate in a Current Events program in which they take turns bringing current events from age appropriate internet sites, local and international newspapers, or children’s magazines to share and present to the class.
