Grade 5

The Grade 5 class at KTS works diligently on their academics throughout the year, and enjoys the rewards when the work is complete. In the reading program, students begin the year studying elements of short stories. Knowledge of characters, setting, and plot diagrams are transferred to our novel study, and then on to our study of Shakespearean plays. Non-fiction reading skills are developed as we research speech topics and work through social studies projects. The spelling program follows the Scholastic Spelling text, testing a different spelling concept each week.

We look at a variety of early civilizations as part of our study of heritage and citizenship, and we also examine the nature of government and elections within Canada. Students also enjoy our study of the environment, and love to help clean up the parks on “Pitch-In Day.” Our math program follows the Saxon 6/5 text book. Students improve their computation skills, speed up their multiplication facts, learn long division, and begin to work with fractions. Exam preparation is a large component of the Grade 5 curriculum. Students learn how to study and prepare for mid-terms in January and finals in June.

The rewards enjoyed by the Grade 5 class include the fall trips to Charleston Lake and RKY Camp, a winter retreat to Camp IAWAH and several hikes throughout the year in local parks, farms, lake side, and provincial parks. Grade 5 students also have the chance to represent their school in a variety of sporting events and competitions throughout the year, including cross-country, volleyball, basketball and soccer, and the opportunities increase for more ‘leading’ roles in school drama and music productions.
