Grade 1 and Grade 2 have successfully hatched 10 chicks this week!

Having carefully cared for the eggs in their incubator for the last 21 days, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students finally met all their young chicks. Names for them are still being discussed but popular choices at the moment are Sheldon and Shelby. The chicks have now been moved to a warm area, where they have easy access to food and water. The children all look forward to the afternoons where they get to have “Chick time” and the baby chickens are allowed to have a little run around and play with the children.

On Friday February 12, several students, teachers and parents embarked on the annual King’s Town School Ski trip. This year, we decided to stay within Ontario and ski at Calabogie Peaks just north of Perth. The weather cooperated for both the driving and the skiing! The sun made an appearance mid afternoon and the slopes were covered with ample amounts of snow. Several of our students and parents had never skied before, but with lessons from the very competent ski instructors at Calabogie, there was a great success rate of new skiers. Veteran skiers hit the slopes and took in the many runs throughout the day, stopping at lunch to catch up with classmates and fellow friends. After a long day of skiing, some headed home on the bus, while others made a trip elsewhere to enjoy festivities for the Family Day weekend.

On the 28th of January Grades 3 and 4 stepped back in time and joined together for a Medieval Feast of grand proportions. Whilst tucking into roasted chicken on trenchers, soups, different varieties of cheese, gingerbread and apple tarts the merry throng enjoyed entertainment on harpsichord. The knights enjoyed the challenge of competitions and the ladies of the realm looked beautiful in their fine dresses made from silks and exotic fabrics from the East. All in all, a wonderful day filled with Jest and fun!

On our last day of the term we took the whole school to Market Square for a ‘Jingle Bell Skate.’ This was a fund raising event for our chosen charity. The students donated some money in exchange for bells for their skates and the money went to the Pamoja Tunaweza Women’s Centre in Moshi, Tanzania at the base of Kilimanjaro. The website for the project is www.tunaweza.org. One of our parents runs a shelter program for homeless women and their children, a primary health clinic and health outreach as well as a business training and microfinance program. Dr Yeates came into the school to give talks on her work in Tanzania and struck a chord with many of the children and staff. So much so that Katie donated all of her birthday money towards the cause!

Today we welcomed Dr. Steven Black and Mrs. Moira Black (Stella’s grandparents) into the Montessori Classroom to tell us the story of Hanukkah. We played with dreidels and were given some gold covered chocolate ‘gelt’ and lit the Menorah for the first day of Hanukkah. We also put on our chef hats and helped Mr Gaben (Noa’s grandfather) make some latkes for our snacks. We ate them with apple sauce and they were delicious! Noa managed to eat four!!
