November 11th, 2011, saw the Grade 4 – 8 students from KTS attend the annual Remembrance Day service at Kingston’s Cross of Sacrifice. Our Head Boy and Head Girl laid a wreath on behalf of the school, and the choir sang a well received version of ‘Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream’. Kingston’s association with the armed forces makes it important that we remember all those who have served their country – indeed, we have a number of military families within our school community – and with the last combat veteran of World War One sadly passing away in May, remembrance was all the more poignant this year.

Lest we forget…

At the end of October, all the students at KTS donned their autumnal colours and took part in an afternoon of fun events in their House groups. All the activities were suggested by the school’s House Council, some of who gave up their time to organize and help run the afternoon’s entertainment.

There were traditional activities, such as pumpkin carving and ‘guess the number of candies in the jar’, as well as many others, such as some outdoor group games, a picture wall of the staff when they were (much) younger, a ‘bravery test’ that involved inserting your hand into the ‘brains’ of some unfortunate pumpkin donors (ask Andrew!) and some wonderful fortune telling from Mr Rixon, who certainly looked – and acted – the part!

Last Thursday, 6th October, all the children from Grades 1 to 8 congregated at Sangers’ Farm for the annual KTS Terry Fox Run. We were blessed with wonderful weather for the day, and under bright blue skies each grade took their turn at negotiating the cross country track around the farm. With our House Captains running alongside the younger students, the children (and some teachers!) made their way through the trees and fields, some running, some jogging and some walking, but all finishing.

As well as running in memory of Terry Fox the students were also running to gain points for their Houses, and when the dust had settled it was Wind (Yellow) who came out on top, narrowly ahead of Fire, Earth and Water. The Wind House Captains raised Mr Little’s replica Terry Fox running shoes as a memorial trophy (thankfully Mr Little hadn’t worn them to run in), but regardless of where everyone finished the day was a great success, with all those present playing their part in perpetuating the memory of Terry Fox.

On Thursday September 15th, the Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 students visited the annual Fall Fair at Kingston’s Community Memorial Centre. The students gained first hand experience in the ways of farming and agriculture, getting up close and personal with a number of pigs, cows, horses and chickens, and they were also treated to exhibits and talks on beekeeping, worm farming (really!), spinning wool and making maple syrup.

The highlights of the day seemed to be Maple the Mechanical Cow (with working udders), the bees in their apiary and the pigs in their pens, above one of which we really did find a spider’s web that we thought simply must belong to Charlotte herself, although Wilbur was not available for questioning at the time.

Many thanks to all our parent volunteers who helped make the day run so smoothly – we hope you had as much fun as the students!

Students and staff took part in balloon races, wet sponge relays, dressing up games and egg and spoon races organized by Mrs Doucet, Yellow House (Air) won Ms Hamel’s gold rush and there were a pair of dramatic readings from Mr Rixon that utilized to the full the acting talents of a number of student volunteers!
