Sports
KTS enters a number of sports events and competitions throughout the year, usually run by the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB), and on this page you can keep up to date with our progress.
Cross Country
The 2011 ALCDSB cross country championships took place at Fort Henry on October 12th, and KTS was represented by a team of 21 athletes with students from Grade 3 all the way through to Grade 8 taking part. Luckily the rain stayed away, and the grey yet mild weather actually made for perfect running conditions on the day. With almost 1000 students taking part it would have been very easy for our athletes to be somewhat overawed, but each and every one of them put in a performance of which they could be proud, and everyone came away with great sense of achievement at the day’s end.

That said, whilst everyone did indeed perform admirably, there were a number of individual performances that merit a special mention. In a field of 210, Moira and Lola ran splendidly to finish 44th and 53rd respectively in the Tyke Girls event, and Abby finished a fantastic 12th out of 126 in the Junior Girls run. The junior boys also performed very well indeed; in a race that consisted of 166 entrants, Dawson came in 27th, Dan came 23rd, Will came 20th, Adam came 10th and Malinga ran an outstanding race to finish first, just as he had done in the Tykes event last year. Such a solid team performance also secured the silver medal overall for our Junior Boys team, a tremendous feat given the size of our school.

In the Senior division, Sydney (22nd) and Zoe (9th) ran magnificently in a girls’ race that included 86 other runners, and Will should be proud of his 14th place finish in the boys’ event, even if this did mean that his sister could claim that she finished higher than him!
Many thanks to everyone who helped out with our training sessions ahead of the competition, and a very big thank you to all the parents who assisted and supported at the event itself; our day ran all the more smoothly as a result!
Volleyball
In the last week of November and first week of December, KTS entered teams in the Junior Coed, Senior Boys and Senior Girls volleyball tournaments, run by the ALCDSB. As in previous years, the senior teams found the competition very tough, but both the boys and the girls could, and perhaps should, have won at least one match apiece, if not two. The girls especially came very close to victory in their last game of the tournament, losing 25-21 to St Paul after a tremendous display of teamwork and improving skill.
The junior team fared a little better, however! Very few of the squad had ever played a competitive game of volleyball before, but nonetheless the team won their first two games, against Sacred Heart and Martello to get their day off to a wonderful start. The support that the boys and girls showed each other on court was so positive to behold, and despite defeats against St Pat’s Erinsville and Kingston Christian, the team rallied to beat St James Major and book their place in the semi-final.
With all expectations already surpassed, the KTS team then came up against St James Major once again in the semi-final, which was to be played best two out of three games. The first game was a nail-biting affair, with KTS three times facing game point against them, but with captain Adam in particular pulling out a couple of miracle plays, our team prevailed and then took the second game in more comfortable fashion to book their place in the final!
Our opponents in the final were Kingston Christian, and although we ran them very close, especially in the second game, they eventually proved strong for us and we had to settle for second place in the end, but what a fantastic achievement that was. The whole school can be extraordinarily proud of our Junior team, and the progress they have made in such a short period of time bodes very well indeed for the future.
Thanks as ever to all the parents who gave their support across all three days and who also transported all the students to and from the venue, and to all the parents and former students who helped Miss Tuepah and Mr Eames at our club sessions.
