Sports 2010/2011
Cross Country
The ALCDSB 2010 cross country championships took place at Fort Henry in October, and KTS was represented by a hardy team of 28 athletes with students from Grade 3 all the way through to Grade 8 taking part. It was a wonderful day, with over 1000 young athletes in competition in various age groups, and our students displayed a wonderfully competitive yet sporting attitude throughout the morning’s events.
Whilst pure participation and the achievement of personal goals were the most important factors on the day, our competitive performance was highly commendable. The Junior Boys team earned a silver medal in the team event, whilst Malinga ran magnificently to win individual gold in the Tyke Boys, a truly excellent performance.
Many thanks to all the parents and friends of the school who helped out on the day, and an especially big thank you to Dr Graeme Smith, whose expert coaching at our club sessions really helped all our runners to achieve their potential.
Volleyball
KTS entered three teams into the 2010 ALCDSB volleyball competition in December: a Girls and a Boys team in the Senior competition and a Coed team in the Junior.
The standard of play was very high, especially in the Senior events, and although both our Girls and Boys teams found the going tough they managed to make a good account of themselves and certainly learned a lot through playing against such a high calibre of opponents.
Our Junior Coed team managed to fare a little better however, winning their group with an undefeated record and then beating St Joseph’s 25-17, 25-16 to set up a meeting with Sacred Heart in the final. The atmosphere was tense, especially in the second set, but we held on to triumph 25-10, 25-19 and thus emerged as 2010 champions! A big well done to all involved, and a big thank you to all the parents who supported our teams on all three days.
Basketball
As with the volleyball, KTS entered three teams into the 2011 ALCDSB basketball tournaments in February and March, and all three teams could be very proud of their achievements on the court.
The Junior Coed team emerged undefeated to top their initial group, an achievement that put them directly into the semi-finals, but in a very physical encounter with Kingston Christian School they lost out by just four points and bowed out of the tournament having played some excellent basketball along the way. Many of the squad were playing their first ever competitive basketball matches, so hats off to all who took part and to all the parents who supported on the day!
For the very first time, KTS was able to field a Senior Girls team, and it was with a mixture of nerves and excitement that they took to the court for their tournament. The girls played splendidly to win their first game, but in a competition of tremendously high standards further victories proved out of their reach despite a fantastic level of effort throughout the day. The girls should be very proud of their performances…well done all!
The Senior Boys were our last team to take to the court, their aim to at least match their record of winning two matches in last year’s tournament. The team played some exceptional basketball to equal that record in their first two matches, and hopes were high as one further victory would send the team into the uncharted territory of the semi-finals. However, it was not to be, an extended break between games two and three seeming to rob the boys of their momentum, and two narrow defeats meant that we had to settle for two wins but no semi-final. As with all our teams though, the effort expended on the day was exceptional, and the team really could have done no more, leaving all their energy on the court!
Finally, many thanks to all the parents who helped and assisted throughout our basketball season, especially to Mrs Anne Borschneck, who helped run our club sessions in the build up to the tournaments.
Soccer
Unfortunately, this year’s soccer tournaments fell victim to the weather, so neither our Junior or our Senior teams were able to defend the titles they won in 2010. However, we were able to arrange our own Junior v Senior challenge match at City Park, and on a thankfully sunny day the Junior squad emerged victorious 3-1, a result that bodes very well for the future!
